Cars and Disconnection

In the short story Boxes by Raymond Carver, the narrators mother moves to the same town as her son so they can be together. Later, she decides to move back to warm California and her son decides to stay in his place and let his mother go away to find her happiness. This concerns him because he knows he probably won't see her again. The story is about feeling disconnected and the story ends with the narrator waving a sad farewell to his mother.

Cigarettes and Depression

Raymond Carver happened to be an alcoholic and a smoker himself. These addictions are present in the narrator throughout the short story. The narrator smokes many cigarettes when he is stressed or worried. At the dinner he realizes that he might not see her again and he starts smoking four cigarettes. Raymond Carver ended up dying from lung cancer due to his addictions and this is why they are a big symbol in the story.
